The novel of electronic signature approved by parliament

The electronic signature law was "upgraded" to contain non-human electronic signature and also electronic timestamp. Those features will allow the delivery of official documents (listings from cadastral maps, docket etc.) on all branch offices of Czech post.

Other info from ČTK (Czech) and directly from Ministry of Informatics, full text of the law. -----

Today's OOo news

Too many news today on the OpenOffice.org planet ;-)

I have added both Norwegian variants to our build system to help people from Norwegian Native-Lang project. First build will be uploaded during this weekend (aka build-14).

Sander Vesik announced opening new community cws cws_src680_ooo20040704 and I'm just working on updating my build system to it.

Martin Hollmichel announced updated roadmap for 1.1.3 (it is planned for August/September 2004).

Hans-Joachim Lankenau announced that resource system for 2.0 is changed to use ISO codes instead of various strings/numbers to identify language dependent resources.

Sunnies are pretty active at the end of this week ;-) Now weekend is coming, so non-Sunnies should work on something too. What do plan to work on during the weekend? -----

Nanoblogger 2.8 released

I use Nanoblogger for my diary. It is wonderful piece of software written in shell, without the need for database engine, with templates and intuitive command line interface. I use CVS version myself, but I'm also tracking regular releases. New version 2.8 was released yesterday. If you do not have blog, try Nanoblogger... -----

SRC680_m44 status

I have just finished updating the DEVEL branch of my build system to SRC680_m44 because it contains changes from 64bit01 child workspace. During test compiles on all three systems I have a good access to, I found those issues:

  • #i30474# - the build in sysui project now uses RPM package manager. As Ken Foskey pointed out in dev mailing list, there is no test if your distribution of GNU/Linux has/uses rpm at all. But I found different issue. Starting from certain version of RPM package manager, you can't install files that are not to be integrated in the final package. This is where my GNU/Linux on x86 build stopped.
  • #i30478# - libxml2 project depends on zlib being delivered already, but zlib is not mentioned as its dependency.
  • #i30479# - AMD64/x86_64 platform is not defined in sal/rtl/source/macro.hxx in THIS_ARCH macro definition.
So my current status is: GNU/Linux systems on x86 stopped at sysui, GNU/Linux on AMD64 crashes on idlc call in udkapi:

SCO back to the UNIX operating system business?

CNET News.com reported that SCO is trying to get back to UNIX operating systems business with UnixWare 7.1.4.

What I think about it? SCO is loosing money for their lawyers instead on their product line. This is the beginning of their end. No need to spend additional money on creating a "new" product like this and to slow down the process I mentioned. Do they really think that customers will buy their software? -----

Dumb mailing list software

I have a really strong SPAM filter that helps me in handling my huge daily e-mail traffic so I can spend less then 3 hours a day on reading my mail. It is a must for me otherwise my work would be really ineffective.

The worst problem with it is that there are crazy mailing list servers (like the one on @linux.cz), that are not able to send correct "probe" message. The probe is sent after several SPAMS from such server are correctly rejected (via 5xx SMTP reply code). Now the really crazy thing: the probe contains excerpt from rejected SPAM, ie. it is also SPAM...

I'm in many mailing lists (GNU projects lists, many OpenOffice.org lists, LKML, ...). Some of them are really badly managed regarding SPAM (like lists of GNU project) and let many SPAM go through them. But none of them is that dumb like @linux.cz. They often send probe that only contains identification of rejected messages (like their IDs or so). None of them includes the text of rejected mail. Sometimes I have to confirm that I'd like to be subscribed, but this is only a small nuisance in comparison with @linux.cz mailing list server :-( -----

EU eGovernment policy-makers encourage the uptake of open document formats

eGovernment policy-makers from the 25 EU Member States on 25 May 2004 endorsed a set of recommendations promoting the use of open document formats by the public sector.

This page also contains replies from both Microsoft and Sun. Valuable reading...

Update: another valuable reading is article on BBC UK where US FTC commissioner said: "But we have seen instances where companies use that monopoly in an anti-competitive way, sometimes to prevent other products from getting to market, to prevent people from sharing ideas and to prevent the kind of innovation that the patent system is really trying to spur on.".

Update 2:J.B. Nicholson-Owens told me it is in fact possible that two companies can own the same patent. Hmm ;-) -----

Can double click be patented?

Rhetorical question ;-) Yes, double click can be patented. In fact, it can't be patented now, because Microsoft already did so. The patent also covers simple short click on the button and also longer click. Ie. almost everything you can do with your button ;-)

Hmm, this is what software patents are all about. Our politicians should think about that twice before saying non-senses like "Patents can help us". -----
